I obtained a payday loan from Ameriloan back in May in the amount of $400. I was unaware that payday loans in NJ are illegal until I found this site. As of date I have paid them $1,275.00. Since I had outstanding checks pending I did not close my account yet. I contacted the bank to dispute the over payments of $875 in which they told me I could not dispute payday loan payments. I am closing the account this week, but wanted to know how I go about getting my overpayments back. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ameriloan is part of MTE,and a bear to deal with.i would file AG,and FTC complaints to start.then go to the sticky titled DEALING WITH ILLEGAL LENDERS.that will guide you.you are entitled to refund, but MTE d/b/a's getting a refund is difficult.go to the sticky, and know we are here to help further.

i live in NJ and never dealt with that company but have gotten a refund back from another.. just keep sending the letters in the sticky that paul mentioned :) and report them asap to anyone that will listen... when closing your account make sure the ACH will not push it back open. good luck and let us know if you have any questions :)

I had filed a complaint with the B.B.B. as advised. Ameriloan responded with the below statement.

Quote:

To Whom It May Concern:
We recognize this complaint as a response to a template of a form letter circulating the Internet. This form letter is full of mis-leading and inaccurate information. Unless this customer has a specific complaint regarding the handling of their account, we do not believe a response is warranted. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

Please let me know what I should do next. Obviously I need to respond.

honestly they do not get too involved.. they tend to collect complaints and than go after companies when they recieve a lot. they do not really personally help consumers (though they are helpful). many states' attorney general's offices do get involved. NJ will not do anything to help you though i still would flood their office with complaints.. maybe if enough people complain they finally will do something to help.

the purpose of having them is that they have the power to shut these companies down. i am sorry if i discouraged you, i did not mean to i just did not want to expect something that will not happen.
we encourage everyone to report these companies to any agency that will listen. the reports will ad up and actions will be taken. it will also leave a paper trail for you to have.
the good news is you do have power within yourself. they will fight it at first and pretend they are illegal but once they see you are not buying this, they will bow down to you. this company is tricky to deal with you but you are 100% right and many have complained to the FTC, etc. about them. hopefully one day soon they will be shut down.

Trust me, it's not because of you that I am discouraged. I knew this was not going to be easy when I started it. I just want what is rightfully mine. I don't know about everyone else, but $875 is a lot of money for me. I could really use it, especially this time of year. One thing I have been taught is that persistence will get you anywhere. And that's what I am going to do.

There is no point to discourage yourself, it has been the case that they do not get involved too much into the matter when the complaints are less but if the complaints are more then they definitely will take some major steps. So it depends on the number of complaints filed against that particular company.
