Ex NFL Player owns Payday Loan chain
Date: Wed, 12/26/2007 - 07:12
Former pro football player Willie Green had a career in the National Football League that could easily be described as “illustrious.†The former receiver, who played for three other NFL teams before settling down with the Denver Broncos for the last two years of his eight-year tenure in the League, has two Super Bowl rings and a proud playing career that has followed him into retirement. Former football players tend to find all sorts of news and exciting pursuits with which to while away their newly-found glut of free time, but improving his golf score and/or taking up coaching were not what Green had in mind when he hung up his helmet. Nowadays, Green is a major player in cash advance lending, an industry as far removed from pro sports as it gets. He owns several payday loan stores, and is considering a career in politics.
Green owns fourteen payday loan stores, situated in the American states of Kentucky, South Carolina, North Carolina and Florida. The business of cash advance lending came so naturally to him that he also became a lobbyist for the fast cash loan industry, talking persuasively to state Legislatures to try and convince them that restrictions on the short-term personal loan industry are not in the best interest of consumers.
Why payday loans? Green says that he always wanted to own his own business, and that cash advance lending seemed like a natural choice for him. He opened his first fast cash loan outlet the same year that the Broncos won their first Super Bowl, and the business took off. In the same, organic vein, Green has said that the next thing he’d like to do is get more involved in politics. Whether he remains affiliated with payday loans still remains to be seen.[/quote]

I don't have a problem with that as long as he is not running a predatory operation. It is a can't lose industry and safe to consumers if properly regulated as a storefront. I would invest money in Amscot if I had it. I have found them very easy to deal with and very fair. What I do have a problem with is the fact that he lobbys to have those restrictions lifted so he can make more and become a predator to satisfy his own greed at the expense of others. That is wrong in my eyes.
Thanks for sharing that!

Good article goudah...I too see no problem with operating a storefront pdl. As long as he follows the licensing and laws of those states. The fact he wants to lobby to lift some of those restrictions..is another story. I do know the NFL expects their players to be upstanding citizens in their communities..if that goes for retired players I do not know...if this includes the way they operate their businesses...who knowsbut I would hope so.

Yes because sure would not want people to think they were legal here, so to all NCers...PDLs are illegal here!! It does not matter who endorses them or who owns them etc, they are not suppose to lend to you if you live in NC and if they do, they are breaking the law.

Great article as usual, Goudah--
But one thing's missing: what are the names of the stores he owns? Does he own franchises for a national chain like Advance America or Check into Cash? Or are they Mom and Pop stores? I think it would make a big difference, yes?
