References, well, you really cannot stop them there. Why do you think they take references? So they can try to contact people when they want money....they hope that they can either locate you if you disappear on them, or that they will bug someone enough and that person will convince you to get in touch with the company you owe money to.

Work, however, might be a different story. Check your state's consumer laws, some states dont allow calls to your work place if you notify them that they are not to call you there.
