Back in 2008 I had 5 payday internet loans. I paid off 3 of them and before the payments came due on my other 2, a debit card charge for airline tickets to Germany showed up on my account.

Needless to say, my bank closed my account and gave me a new debit card and checking account. One of the loan companies called me by phone and I was able to pay off that loan with no penalty for the delay. At the time, I was working full time and taking care of 2 elderly parents and really forgot about the other loan.

Today I received a phone call at work from Frontier Financial Group regarding a debt to LoanPointUSA. They want me to pay $1600, but if I was willing to settle now they could greatly reduce the fees, etc. etc. They actually asked me to make a fair offer to pay off the debt and I told them I didn't know what the original debt even was at this late date, so how could I make an offer.

They were nice but kept mentioning I needed to settle before they filed against me at Warrick County (county I live in). They said the original lender would no longer deal with me after various attempts to contact me. I told them that their client was lying about trying to contact me and that I was a person who acknowledged my debts and didn't like being lied about. I told them they got me on the first try, so why did LoanPointUSA have a problem finding me? They had no answer for that.

I couldn't seem to get the original loan amount from them. They offered to settle for $700.00 and sent me an email with this information:

Dear My Name,

The law firm RoVo & Associates represents Frontier Financial Group - Loan Point USA in the area of creditor???s rights. Frontier Financial Group has been assigned to collect the outstanding balance on the above referenced account.
Frontier Financial Group is prepared to offer you a one time settlement in the amount of $700.00. Your settlement will expire unless we receive your payment on or before 01/19/11.

This is a communication from a debt collector. This is an attempt to collect a debt. Any information obtained will be used for that purpose.

Very truly yours,

ROVO & ASSOCIATES

I told them I received the email but that I was going home to check my files for any such loan since they couldn't tell me the original amount and I wasn't sure $700 was fair if the original loan was only $100. They replied they would be open a few more hours and accepted Visa or MC debit, Amer Xpress or checks.

I'm sure I may owe something because I feel I had 5 loans back in 2008 - but I don't remember anymore. Any advice on what I should do?

Hi!
Welcome to the forums!

Send a debt validation letter to the collection agency via certified mail. After receiving the debt validation letter, the collection agency has to send you a copy of the agreement made between you and the original creditor. They are also required to show the total debt amount, interest rates, etc. So, if the CA is not able to validate the debt, then send them a cease and desist letter. If they are able to validate the debt, then you???ll come to know about the total debt amount. Thereafter, you can negotiate a settlement based on the original amount.
