Also, how do you find out exactly how much you've paid. I know the obvious of going back through bank statements but I don't keep them. Can I call the company and find out that way? What are your thoughts.

I doubt if calling any of these companies will do you any good,
I doubt if calling any of these companies will do you any good, they'll just give you some outrageous figure. You really need to calculate what you owe them, can you go online and look at your account? Oh, maybe you closed it out by now. If I were you, I would be doing some serious calculating. Here is a sample letter, but make sure you tailor it to your needs and personalize it. You may need to omit some parts.

May I add please that you should send the letter certified mail/return receipt. That way they cant say they never got it. You will have proof that someone did indeed sign it with the return card you get from the post office.
