Got the strangest Private Message

Ok I found this to be odd, I received a private message from someone named waveslider, aka Mike and he claimed to be from NJ and he said he posted a few days ago regarding payday loans, and needing help. The funny thing about the message was I went to look for him to review his profile and he didn't exist. He asked me for my phone number so he could explain his problem to me a little better now I am not one to give up my number he could be a scammer posing, but has anyone else had this happen to them or should I look at it as a trick?
