i got a call yesterday and googled the number which came back as my county sheriff office...he did not say he was with sheriffs office only said he had papers for me regarding "theft of services" and said there was a number i could call by today to take care of it and not go to court. So, i call the number today (866-841-2555) and asked what the debt was and who it was with and the amount...was told tendollarpayday loan and the amount was 425...i told him i would pay 50 a month..he said he needed 30% down and i told him i would give that to them next week when i get paid...he then demanded my bank account info which i refused to give him and he got very rude and said "i guess i will see you in court then" and hung up on me......i dont think they will be able to serve me because the county website says they will only serve 9:00 am to 4;30 pm m-f and i work an hour away and am gone from 730-700 everyday.....any help would be great.

This must be a store front loan? Theft of services? You might look on your county's website, I would also call the original creditor. Send them a certified return receipt letter with an agreement to make payments (what you can afford), you might also include a good faith payment, I would give them a money order and not use a personal check with your account number on it. IF it does go to court, at least you will have proof you were trying to make amends.

There are ways to spoof the caller-ID. They might have spoofed the sheriff's phone number so that it would look like the sheriff was calling.......

Generally, the sheriff's dept does not take payments for a debt, or even discuss the account at all. In civil matters, their only job is to serve summons when a complaint is filed with the court, or to otherwise carry out orders by the court.

This sounds hokie.

I googled the number and it actually came up on this site as Check & Business Services 866-841-2555 so it is collection agency.

I looked up tendollarpayday on the NE database but I did not find anything. I am thinking they are not legal and maybe the collection agency is not legal which would account for their rude behavior. You can call just to make sure at 402-471-2171.

I doubt the sheriff would play messenger service for a collection agency.

Hi traci0222,

Yes, that is the Douglas County Sheriff's number. But since this is absolutely NOT a criminal matter, the number is probably spoofed. If so, that IS a crime. I agree with desperatelyseekingsanity, call the Sheriff's office and double check. And I also agree with NASCAR_Devil, you have $1000 coming to you for 1, not to mention, if they spoofed a Sheriff's office, that is probably a criminal matter so things could be VERY bad for tendollarpayday. Go get 'em!

And "theft of services" is a totally bogus charge. These people have a lot of nerve....

Thanks for all the help.

Chrys,

The original amount borrowed was 300 (according to the man i spoke to the other day at the CA) the total owed now is 475....I honestly dont remember what i paid...it was more than3 years ago....i dont think i paid any on the original loan, but i know i kept extending it for maybe 2 or 3 months so i did pay all the "interest" during that time.

Hi,

Since they are an illegal company you only morally owe the principal. You have more than likely paid it, and it's been 3 years, so I'd say let them eat cake.

File those complaints, and when they call again, tell them you have filed complaints against them for their illegal tactics, they are never to call you again, and just ignore them.

If it shows up on your credit report, dispute it with the credit reporting agency, but it's doubtful it will. They will not take you to court, they will lose.

Same thing happeded here, they called me at work saying they were with my county, said they were going to be serving me, then said I received my original paper work right? I said no, they said well then I can save you a lot of money and hassle, Ill transfer you to the ones you owe. It was "Department of check and business services" so I asked for their number he gave me the 866-841-2555, I put him on hold called the # and they said they were located in NY.
So it is definately a collection agency. If they are spoofing their #....BUST them! I dont have caller ID at work.

I had them send me something, they just sent through email a typed out agreement letter for payment. No letter head, and it was sent from a gmail email address northeastern.financ@gmail.com Interesting that this business doesnt have an actual domain.
