I sent the letter and now just got a call from the collection agency here at work. I closed the accounts and I talked to my bank who says that they understand and assure me that the one joint account I have with my wife cannot be accessed by these guys. This guy from the collections department threatened that he is going to find out where I bank and "gaurantees they will get their money". I was feeling kind of bad about doing this because it is the third time I got one with them then found out that it was illegal and I have been trying to get out of this trap with 8 PDL companies that had me taking PDL's to pay off PDL's. I feel stupid for having gotten myself into this mess and want to be empowered to get out of it. Since the inception of the first loan I have received from these people, I received a total of $2100 and paid back $4944. That is $2844 profit for them, I think I have paid enough. He is saying that it does not matter that I paid off the other loan twice before, it only counts for this loan that I have paid nothing toward the principal. He also tried to tell me that being in Costa Rica, the FTC is the only lending laws they have to follow and are not bound by State Laws?? I told him no more talk on the phone, all communication in writing or e-mail. Am I wrong about this? It is all kind of scary. I am a Virginia resident.
