After a long, long crawl I'm almost out of payday loan hell. I have one remaining loan to pay off with Check 'n Go and they've been great (or as great as a lender can be when you're paying 1000% interest).

Today, however, I got a call from a number I was able to trace to Phoenix Debt Management. These are the people who leave threatening messages that say things like:

  • "Please contact me before 5 p.m. today or I must make a decision based on the information in front of me."
  • "There is a matter with your social security number pending."
  • "We have called you several times and will be forced to pass this matter on."
I have no outstanding payday loans (other than that mentioned above). My bank accounts associates with other payday loans have been closed. I do not know why Phoenix is calling and honestly I don't care. I'm sick of being bullied and I would like to make this stop. They call randomly. If they were going to report me (ha) they would've done so months ago. My question is -- do they ever stop? Or am I forced to deal with this for the unforeseeable future? I see from a search of the forum that they are fairly active, but I've read of no real resolution. How do these folks even stay in business? This forum was a godsend to me last year when I was at the end of my rope and I am truly thankful to each and everyone of you!

After a bit of searching, I was able to determine this is related to a loan I had with VIP PDL. I did veer from the original repayment terms. While the outfit is (I believe illegal) in the state of Ohio, I agreed to pay a total of 537 in installments. I made the first installment of $179, but was unable to make the remaining two and sent a money order via certified mail with a counter offer. I am going to go home and verify that the money order has been cashed. According to my records, it's possible that I may still owe VIP 298. At the time I thought it was better to pay than deal with the frustration of getting them to assent that they are in fact an illegal lender. If the money order has been cashed, I am going to continue per the original terms of the agreement (4 installments of 60 and one payment of 58 on the 15th and last of the month). I think I must have blocked this one out. 2009 was NOT a good year! Hopefully once I get this one out the way, 2010 will be much better.
