Maine Payday Loans
Date: Fri, 08/31/2012 - 12:23
I have read where Internet payday loans are illegal in Maine, but I just want to clarify some information before proceeding.
I was going to look into consolidating them, but I think this forum has convinced me I can do it on my own.
1. Can they attempt to garnish my wages?
2. If I have had multiple loans with the same company in the past, do I add up the total of all the loans? I think there is only one loan that I have not covered the base of - so, for $800, I have paid $260. But, I have paid them off a few times in the past.
3. Filing a Complaint for AG and/or Credit Consumer Protection - is this a necessary thing? I guess what I want to know - can this bite me in the butt if I don't? (I know people in that office and do want to keep it a secret, but I will file if necessary.)
4. The calling of work thing - can I get away with saying it is a scam? I have had a scam caller here at work before and actually had to change my extension because of it - the one where they say 'bad things will happen to you'...so they might actually believe me.
Anyway, thank you for this site and all of the help posts have already given me!

1. They can attempt a VOLUNTARY wage assignment which you may have agreed to in the loan contract. That's why you must revoke this when you contact them via email.
2. I'd add up the total if it were me. Remember the loan is completely illegal and unenforceable, you only owe the principal on moral grounds.
3. It's not a necessity.
4. Yes tell your office you're being targeted by a scam. Advise them that they may go after your co workers or supervisors as well.
