I took out a payday loan online/over the phone in October of 2011 for $400. I have paid back well over $2000 & when I called 2 months ago to see what my payoff was, I was told it was $680!!! I am at a lost as to why I still owe that much!! I haven't paid on this for the last 2 months as my back acct got hacked into & wiped me out! I closed that acct because of this. United credit has that old bank info to take payments out. I have this feeling that it was them that wiped my acct out but can't prove it. I had called a few months before this happened to get my payment date changed. I was told that in order to change my date I had to send a copy of my bank statement showing my changed paydays. I asked who do I sent it to & was given their generic email & I asked if I needed to put attention to (someone's name) or anything & was told no. So I emailed my info & called to confirm they received it. They hadn't. So I emailed it again, waited a day & called to confirm they received it $ was told they never got it. I just left it as it was & forgot about it. I just wonder if it was received & someone got it?? Anyway, I was told that the payoff amount was without the fees & that they took off all the late fees. Do I still have to pay that much back?? Is there some other way to get tho lowered?? I just hate that I still owe that my h on a $400 loan!!

I live in Louisiana
The loan was through United Credit Line
Loan was for $400
Have paid $2000+

By the sound of things, I believe they are illegal. You need to check your state department of financial regulation to determine if they are legally licensed. If not, then on this site click on forums, then click on payday loan help, then click on sticky on how to deal with illegal lenders. Follow every step, do not skip. Please register with the forum so that you can see when your post has been answered.

I looked at the laws pertaining to La & it list 3-4 payday loans that I guess are most common? But it also said that in La they do not have to have a license if they do not have a physical location in the state (United credit is based out if Fla, I think) and that if they do not have a physical location in the state then they do not have to follow state laws.
I don't know if this is the right loan company- I remember when I took the loan out the name was American *something*.... Can't remover as it has been a year & a half & the name that shows up in my checking acct was United Credit. So I don't know if they are the same or not? All I have is the number that they call from, I have not answered these calls for that last month. It is always a foreign, hard to understand accent on the phone, even when I have called their customer service in the past. So I'm not sure how to find out if they are legal or not.
The number is 877-491-5477 and 877-741-1969.
