I have a qeustion about the Greendot cards. I recently started using a greendot mastercard since I cancelled my bank account and thus my direct deposit. I was hoping to have my paycheck direct deposited onto the card but my company dosn't allow that. But anyways, I bought something on-line using my card and was charged $4.95 for a "web based purchase" fee??? Do I have to pay 5 dollars everytime I buy something on-line?? I will call them tomorrow to find out, but I thought someone on here might know the answer.

I have a Greendot Mastercard prepaid debit card myself, and I use it exactly as I would a checking account. My payroll is direct deposited onto it every payday, and I have purchased things online (including minutes for my cell phone) without incurring any additional fee. I'm not sure what that additional fee would be for. I just paid for my monthly minutes on my cell phone last month, and the only thing deducted from my Greendot card was the amount I paid for the minutes.

No Sue, I have never heard of Tab bank. I will check into it. I'll probably just open a bank account w/ another bank. I've heard horror stories of PDL lenders obtaining new account info and trying to debit the account. But, i've been told thats not as common as i had feared. Lets hope thats true. It would be a nightmare to wake up one morning and find that my new bank account had been drained!!

I generally will not suggest to anyone that they use a pre-paid due to all the fees involved. However on the old board, a member there told me about some pre-paid cards that are pretty good deals as far as fees go.

Even though there are MANY options out there for everyone when it comes to banking, some people still prefer the pre-paid cards to regular checking accounts.

For more information on pre-paids, see Jtels blog spot at prepaidbanking.blogspot.com

But remember there are options for regular checking accounts out there available to everyone regardless of being reported to chexsystems. Don't feel you have to settle for pre-paid cards when it comes to getting an account. Someone above mentioned TAB ( excellent option ) also maybe People's Cash Solutions but I would really look into finding something local if possible first depending on where you live
