I had to get tags for my car today...

SO I got to the BMV, and no one else was there. YIPPEE! Or so I thought.

They pull up my records and inform me that my registration priveleges are suspended because I didn't show proof of insurance October of 2004. Oh YES I did...When I paid the ticket, I had to show it to them then. And the lady said I was all taken care of.

So I had to drive all the way to my insurance agents office to get the records. Then I had to drive to the reinstatement office and wait in line for 2 hours. Then I had to drive all the way back to the original BMV to get my tags.

I have the worst headache ever....GAHHHH! I've been on the SAME policy for 10 years. Annoying.

I'm sorry. Just the thought of getting tags makes me sick to my stomach. There's always some kind of rigamarole, and the person JUST in front of you either A.can't speak English B.has a warrant out, or C. Is creating a scene. Every year I say I'm going to renew by mail, every year I wait until the last minute and don't.

Something I want to relate here.

This makes me think about the loopholes in a private sector. Often, the private sector claims to be the best and quickest working people when compared with the govt. sector. They are their strongest competitors. But, we see day to day examples that change our thoughts.

Wow, horrible story about the BMV, Jessi! I have one you probably won't believe, but it's true....it's just one more facet of the "crapstorm" I described in another post regarding the water in my basement.

In September, when I went to renew my tags, I realized my drivers license also expired that month, so I was going to renew that too. I handed the lady at the counter my license, and she proceeded to punch things up on the computer. Soon, though, she got a concerned look on her face, and said "we can't renew this - there's a problem". I was bewildered - there was no reason for me not to be able to renew my license. (If I knew of a reason, why would I attempt to renew it?!?) She told me that my license had been suspended in Virginia..the state I haven't lived in for FOUR YEARS. I told her I didn't think that was possible, since I hadn't lived there for 4 years, and she gave me a printout with an 800 number to call to the Virginia DMV, and that not only couldn't I renew my license, I also couldn't renew my tags!

So as I'm driving around ILLEGALLY...freaking out every time a car pulls up behind me....hoping to God I don't get stopped...over a month later, I'm still trying to straighten this out.

It took nearly a month of phone calls (at work, where I can't afford to be on the phone for long), and being put on hold for an average of 18 minutes EVERY time I call, before I get ticked and hang up, or have to pick up another call. I finally reached someone who informed me the reason my license was suspended in Virginia was because I didn't tell them I moved! Uh..ok...so the Virginia plates and my Virginia driver's license that I mailed back in a large padded envelope, with a letter containing my new address never reached them, I told her. She said they never got them, but had sent notices to my address in Michigan notifying me that they would suspend my license if I didn't contact them, because they had received notice that my insurance policy had been cancelled. Well, of course it was cancelled - I had moved out of state and obtained new insurance up here. AND HOW DID THEY GET MY NEW ADDRESS IN MICHIGAN IF THEY DIDN'T RECEIVE THE LETTER, LICENSE AND PLATES I SENT THEM?? (And I never got the notices they claim they sent - neither one of them.)

The long and short of it is that I have to file an appeal of the suspension IN WRITING and ask for a hearing (over the phone, not in person, thank goodness for small favors), and provide proof that the vehicle in question (which I no longer own) was not in VA on 2/20/03. In order to do THAT, I have to call the Michigan Secretary of State office and obtain a vehicle registration record that proves it was registered up here at that time. Which, according to their website, can take up to 6 weeks to get sent to me.

I think the DMV in any state is the epitomy of frustration for most people.
