i know this is odd and off topicbut hear it goes my 12 year old cousin has been huffing breathing in RUBBING ALCOHOL... i caught her doin it! I was pi**ed off :x when she saw that i saw her she started cring i asked her how long has this been going on she said she did not know! She is beeging me not to tell and acting like its no bi deal....Should i tell her mom .... what do I do? :?:

Tasha, just my opinion as a mom, but you absolutely have to tell her mother. She is endangering her life, and as a mother, I know I would have a very hard time knowing that a close relative knew this was going on and didn't say anything...just because the child asked them not to tell. The child will be angry with you for a while, but they will get over it - you are saving her life.

Definately tell her mom. If she gets mad at you--I'd rather someone be mad at me and be alive, than not be mad at me and be dead. She'll thank you later.

If you go to your local library you can find articles, books, information about this kind of drug abuse. Share the info with her. Obviously she hasn't seen the long term effects of this. I guess I was lucky, in that my school district MADE us watch the videos...They are very graphic and shocking. Sometimes it takes being scared to get it into your head.

Make her feel comfortable in your company. Explain your cousin that her mother should be aware of this fact because the alcohol is certainly damaging her health, and her mother will treat her in the best way. She needs a good friend; make her feel that you are always next to her.

I'm a Substance Abuse Counselor, and I can tell you this is one of the most dangerous highs. Huffing, as some call it, destroys more brain cells, and faster than almost any other drug. She can get rid of the alcohol, but huffers will huff anything, from paint, fabric cleaner, hairspray, etc. She needs some type of treatment now, while she is young and they have caught it. Good Luck..Karen
