Have you all heard the big news that has been on today about Imus making comments on a womans basketball team? Any comments on what you think?

Who knows? I listened to him every morning. Seems like he has got into a mess this time.

I guess we're on the oppossite side of the fence on this.... I said something on another board I belong to, it ended up being a huge long rant...but whatever...the gist of it is this...

If it were Wendy Williams saying something about a predominantly white team, it wouldnot be in the news.

I really don't care to hear about any of this stuff at all. Why is it always such a big deal...

Does anyone remember the first amendment?

(please, no hate mail...i could honestly care less about any of this sort of thing...i'm not racist toward any race, I'm a jew, people say plenty of things all the time that are derogatory toward jewish people...I'm just saying that this sort of thing shouldn't be all over the news...)

how bout that larry birkhead?

I was really heard to hear that he was fired...because he did get really good ratings for them. And, I do agree it just sort of seems that it's not what is said but who says it. But you watch and wait....just like Howard Stern(the DJ...not Nicole's whatever,)....Imus will make a small fortune with a contract with 1 of the sattelite stations!

I have never heard Imus before; I do believe his comments were vulgar, overboard and he shouldn't have said them.

But I also look back to my own experiences, and dealing with people in general. How many times have we said something, and realized the second we said it- that we shouldn't have???

It is human nature to give someone a second chance. Criminals, debtors, politicians ... are always given a second chance in life, even third, fourth and fifth chances. So I don't see why we make such a big deal over one little incident. I don't think Imus has shown a repeated history of making comments like this... why is he being treated worse than a murderer?
Where is his second chance? I guess when race is involved, we need to be politically correct, and there is no second chances.

If that is the case, we should correct the first amendment to say "We have free speech ... unless, of course, someone is offended by your speech. In that case, free speech doesn't exist."

At any given point, someone will always be offended with anything that is ever said. "You can please some people all the time, all people some of the time; but you can never please all people all the time." Maybe as a nation, we should stop speaking to each other, out of fear that someone may get offended.

That's a good point sswett. Is Free speach ever free? Imus was employed by CBS when he made his comments, and on the job. On the other hand, Imus had been doing this routine (insulting everyone) for over 30 years in the sake of comedy. His comments were lame compaired to those of Howard Stern when he was on commercial radio. But Like Stern, I'd be willing to bet that Imus turns up on satellite radio with a hefty contract.

 Well,I wanted to add to my comments which will be completely opposite to the post as usual .

My wife is black and all three of my children are legally black according to the ancient rules of race labeling down here. We have lived with these type of comments as a couple for the last twelve years and individualy for most of our lives. I do believe in the first amendment like anyone. If he was out in the street doing a protest and said this I would have understood.

The fact that he was being paid and representing his company limits his ability to have comments of this sort. Now that I am old and downright contrary, when I hear these comments I get mad. If a person spoke them to me,I would be in their face in a minute. My children are being taught what it is like to grow up in a mixed race family and I do all I can to shelter them from as much as this bs that I can.

Ok, here's my take on the thing.
First off, I agree with the firing. Imus said something totally disgusting and stupid and in my book, absolutely deserved to be canned. Will he get another job in radio? Yes--because now he's controversial and a station owner out there will believe that he will attract listeners, which is the name of the game in broadcasting--as this will translate into advertising dollars.
And I also think that the public figures who are blasting him need to take a look in the mirror and remember racist comments that they have also made--Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson (remember hymietown, anyone??) and all of the rappers out there, who continually refer to women as **tches and ho's and also use the N word, I might add.
Racism is wrong, wrong, wrong in all forms--White against Black and Black against White. Just think about this: What if it had been a journalist like Tavis Smiley who had made this disgusting comment against a predominantly Caucasian team? Would the outcry be as blatant?
I do think that Imus has a self-destruct wish and blew a great gig. He deserves no sympathy and should get none--but we have to look at the big picture. Just my thoughts...
