Is it my imagination....or do some topics and threads disappear? I have even noticed (I think) that some posts within a thread disappear from time to time.

I think you may be on to something! Who has the authority or should I say ability to delete posts anyway? No matter what the posts say it is really rude to do so.
Moderators and Admin's have the ability and authority to delete/
Moderators and Admin's have the ability and authority to delete/edit posts and threads. I will delete irrelevant threads, obvious spam posts, Russian posts and the ever present "XYZ company is so great yada yada yada" posts that are obviously made by someone from XYZ company. It is not rude to delete posts that have no relevance, or that resurrect 3 year old threads or obvious bashing by trolls.
