I am sorry to hear about your daughter but we are a debt forum and we do not try and collect debts. You may try and contact walmart or the police dept. about the people who are trying to get extra money from you. Or you can post the company that is contacting you and we can try and get the contact information for you so you can call them. I wish you luck and hope your daughter learned her lesson not to steal anymore.

She might have googled "debt collection" and ended up here---sharonbaker-there are so many scams these days someone may have come across court docs. and are trying to scam you for money--but if someone contacted you regarding additional debt on this matter you need to find out who it was--and don't be afraid of them if debt is not owed--the people on this sight are here to help and from what I understand--no one here calls anyone unless you ask them to call you. I'm also thinking that perhaps--is this a letter you sent someone who contacted you Sharon? and you are wondering if you worded it right? Please respond so someone with knowledge and experience can help you :)

thank you Kashzan --I also hope that if Sharons' comments were a sincere attempt for help from this sight that she will not have been made to feel bad for being here--Sharon --first and foremost--it is not your fault that daughter did this- the best parents in the world have children who do wrong things! It is in no way an indication of your parenting skills and you should not be ashamed !--and I wish you the best in dealing with this situation! Hope you are still here! Because there are people on this sight who will not judge you in any way shape or form!
Of course we will not judge! Everyone makes mistakes.

my point is that maybe Sharons' post was not a mistake--for a seemingly newbie--but simply a request for help! keep in mind sharon didn't make mistake but daughter did and she is apparently trying to pick up the pieces :P

My husband catches shop lifters for a living. Sometimes the store is allowed to persue damages because the item stolen can't be resold. It doesn't matter if it was given back before someone leaves the store. It goes in an evidence locker. At least it does at the place he works for.

There is a damage to the store. If someone stold from me and ran out the door with it, yes they would return it and you better believe they will not only pay court cost, fines, fees, etc but to me for restatution.

What Wal-mart does in my town for first offenders is make them walk for an hour or two back and forth carrying a sign saying I stole from this store.

If Sharon's daughter paid her fine and has a receipt for doing that...then how did she receive a bill for damages of 200 dollars??? She never stated how she came about that..she seems to think it was from this site..she needs to contact the Walmart store where it happened and talk to the manager.

I wish we could do that sign thing here at the bank. That would be awesome! Seeing those bank robbers with a sign in front of the branch with a sign saying what a loser they are. All they do in federal prison is compare notes with other bank robbers to learn how to do it better next time. Anything to feed that meth habit.

That is going to have a bad negative drawback. While getting pleasure at watching their embarassment the consumers will believe that the bank can't protect their money :/

Maybe, or they will realize that we actually DO catch the guys that try and do it. It's a fact of life...banks will be robbed. Anyplace that has lots of money in one location is a target. When people hear about bank robberies on the news, but then don't hear that they were caught...that causes more unrest and distrust than when they hear a place was robbed and the guys were caught. I've been in one robbery, and they guy was never caught. I've also called the cops on forgery attempts. One of them, the guy sat and stared at me while I made up lame stories waiting for the cops to show up. He stared at me, studied my face.....then the cops came. They put him in cuffs, read him his rights, gave him a notice to appear in court, and let him go right there. He would have been matrixed out of the jail anyway, but the guy had been sitting there staring at me the whole time waiting. The cops had no sympathy for how scared I was that the guy was going to come back and try something when walking to my car after work, or try and follow me home. So, any way these guys can be embarrased and publically shamed is fine with me.

I have heard that in some states, retailers may pursue a separate civil penalty by statute. At any rate, in addition to what LSW posted, Walmart has labor costs to consider in regards to the detention, questioning, and prosecution of the thief.
If a civil penalty is imposed, I wonder if there is an SOL on such a "debt".

Actually I worked at Wal-Mart. They do have a constant battle with shoplifters. Now in the small town I live in some of the tactics they used to capture a shoplifter was done by the police dept not our store security. However the biggest percentage of thefts came of store employees.

This person most likely went to court, and recieved a court fine. When arrested at walmart, if done correctly, she/he was advised of walmarts civil demands and trespass policies. Civil demands means walmart will send a restitution bill, between $50.00 and $500.00 for the theft that was commited.

when my son was a teenager, he was arrested at walmart for shoplifting. he was trying to impress some girl in the store, but he was more embarrassed when they walked him through the store in handcuffs. also, he was banned from walmart for a year. i hope that he learned his lesson. :D

There's a massive amount of shoplifting at places like Walmart. So much that some stores (which I won't mention) no longer prosecute unless the item is over a certain amount.
A large part of that $200 was probably court costs. I've been in court when there were a large number of shoplifters. The judge usually fined them, plus court costs, and banned them for life from the store they lifted from.
