I was recently turned down for a loan because of of the inquiries on my credit report. My questions are:
1) Can I block further inquires?
2) Can I remove any from my report?
3) How long will they stay on my report? (nevermind I see AR and PRM stay for 1 year)

Apparently this is the worst thing about my report besides the 6 digits I owe in debt. I make more than my debt per year but I want to (and will be able to) clean it up within 4 years, for my children's sake.

Thanks!
Quicksand

Quicksand,

Let's take it one by one-

Credit inquiries stay in your report for 2 years. You can dispute any credit inquiry older than 2 years with bureaus.

You can get credit inquiry removed from your file. Before proceeding further, let me tell you, soft inquiries do not hurt your score, however, hard inquiries do. And FCRA allows only the authorized credit inquiries to stay in your report.

If you see any credit inquiry is damaging your score, write to the creditor who ran this. State clearly that you did not authorize this inquiry hence they should remove it. Creditors might come up with some proof claiming you allowed them to do it. In that case, go through the papers carefully and dispute the terms seem to be hazy.

I'm not sure if you can block further credit inquiries. Moreover, it will not be very handy. It will restrict prospective lenders to access your report too. However, you can speak to credit bureaus to know whether you can block access of any particular creditor. Hope some other members will have something more to add here.

Thanks Stanley! Again :}
Most of them are credit cards I already have. But they are inquiring almost monthly. According to the credit report legend, it says these will stay on my report for 12 months....
I suppose there is no way to block an existing creditor from checking, but would it raise a red flag if I ask them not to check so often?

You're welcome quicksand :D

Inquiries done by your existing creditors, aka soft inquiries never hurt your score. You can verify it with credit bureaus also. Probably it's their company policy to inquire on how the consumers are doing with their credit and that is the reason they pull your credit report frequently.

However, if you feel that your file is looking clumsy due to so many inquiries, you can talk to your credit card companies. Keep us updated if you find any new information on this.

Hi Stan, well in reviewing my credit report with my husband I realized I had the Inquiries reversed. Actually I have 12 Hard Inquiries since September. 10 on September 19th alone. When I looked at my calendar we had just traded in 2 cars (both over 100K miles) on or around that date. It sticks in my mind because within 2 days of getting our new cars we were stuck inteh mass hurricane evacuation taking 12-20 hours to get 100 miles away!!!

My question now is, can I request the 9 other banks (auto finance companies, etc) that did not finance my car to remove the inquiry?

Did you authorize these 9 finance companies to run credit check? If they did it with your consent, chances are they will not remove this. Moreover, credit inquiries done on the same date are considered as 1 inquiry.

However there is no harm in requesting them to remove these. Best of luck :D

I just checked my credit and find that an inquiry has been made to my credit. I believe its an old account sold to a collection agency. I have been in Chapter 13 for the last 2 1/2 years. Can I demand they remove this inquiry?

Op,
Anytime you go home or auto shopping those inq's should be counted as a single inq. I would ask to remove them since your credit was damaged.

Barbara,
If collection agency has your file, they probably have legal purpose to pull your credit.Since you are in a bankruptcy plan,if debt was included in plan they cannot collect on it. By using plan, creditors must follow rules of the bankruptcy code.

dalfire, they are pulling Ar's which should be softs seen only by you.Ar=Account review. As long as you have account with them, they can pull. Now if they are indeed pulling hards a terse call to their compliance dept is needed asap. Most creditors with active accounts only pull hards on application and credit line increase.

My recently added accounts were a lucky break for me.
The only hard I got was American express. The other two had pulled softs and were happy with that.
