I am interested in maintaining what is left of my credit history, is renegotiating debt going to leave bad comments on my credit reports?

There are various ways of reducing the debt. You can take programs like consolidation, settlement or even file bankruptcy. While bankruptcy should be avoided at all costs when you are trying to fix your credit, you should also give a thought when choosing a settlement program. Don't take a settlement program unless you have difficulties in paying even the minimum payments set in the consolidation program. Besides, the status 'settled' will appear in your credit report that will create problems in getting new credit.

Out of all the options, the best way to reduce your debt will be using a consolidation program. This program does not have any negative consequences in the long run. Use it if you are unable to make the minimum payments to your creditors. Additionally, most of the late payment fees will also get reduced and you will be offered a low monthly pay off. The benefits of this program have been summed up below in the link:

Be rest assured, debt consolidation won't leave any negative scar in your credit file. The program will disappear after your accounts are paid in full. If you are defaulting in your payments, your credit will be viewed more favorably than before after enrolling in this service.
