Hi all :)

This post is geared toward the Moms of the board, but some of these ideas are good for anybody. Here are a few ideas that I have gathered for saving a couple bucks...every cent makes a difference for those of us in debt!!

1. Work on that electricity bill!! Consider purchasing an energy-efficient appliance when possible. Turn down the fridge a bit during the colder months. If you can, hang the clothes out to dry instead of drying them in the dryer. They smell great too :) Turn the thermostat just a couple degrees in either direction depending on the season. It makes a huge difference!

2. Instead of hitting the amusement park with the kids, take a bike ride or visit the park and have a picnic! You can spend hundreds at the amusement park, but you will have better memories with the kids and get great exercise on a nice day outside.

3. Consider swapping babysitting duties with another parent instead of paying a babysitter. I know my babysitter is really expensive, and that money could be used to pay off my debt instead!!

4. Instead of going to the movie theater, rent a movie and invite another family over for a potluck! It will be fun for everybody and so cheap!! If you must go to the theater, make it a dollar theater! Most cities have one, and the kids don't know the difference :)

5. This one I always do - my kids LOVE to draw and color, and they are always sneaking in and taking my printer paper, which is expensive! So when we go shopping, I make sure to get some paper bags. I let the kids have them to color on. It's nice also because you are also recycling in a way :)

Just thought I'd share these tips that I have read along the way. They can help!

~Mary :)

Mary,

It was a great post indeed! These habits will not save some bucks but will help you to lead a peaceful and happy life too. See you have revealed that your kids have a knack towards drawing, this is good.

Kids are like liquid metals. They will be shaped up as you mould. This is the time to impart good habits to their mind. They always like to be with family members rather than spending time with babysitter. I understand it is difficult for parents to manage time for kids sometime, but do as much as you can. I'm sure the million dollar smile on their face will fade all your troubles.

Hi Stan :)

I do spend a huge amount of time with the kids. Even when I go out, I take them with me whenever possible. One of the reasons I quit my last job was because I was not seeing them enough! My new jobs lets me stay at home with them most of the time, and I am more than welcome to take them to work with me. I love it! I am not as financially stable as I once was, but it is worth it. :)

I cannot remember who posted it, but I read in forums on how to save money with your bank-

The member posted that his/her bank has a unique program that helps to save some bucks. It goes like that, whenever your account is debited by any creditor or yourself, bank make it a round figure and the rest of the balance is saved in another account for you.

Say for example, XYZ Company debited $48.6 from your checking account. Your bank will deduct $50 first. They will transfer $48.6 to XYZ and will put $1.4 in another account for you.

This way $$ will be piled up and you will find a good amount at the financial year ending. You can use this money during Christmas as well. Isn't it a great scheme?

I cannot locate the exact thread, so need you who posted it :D

My favorite way to save $$ on clothing is to dig through the clearance racks at my favorite stores. 2 weeks ago, I found 2 shirts on the 50% off rack, and got another 50% off that because one of them had the tag on wrong--No one can tell since i wear my clothes right side out..lol, and the other had part of the seam out..I fixed that in 5 minutes with some black thread. I got each shirt for $2.50. :) Originally they were $10, so I got $20 worth of clothes for $5.00.

I also use cloth diapers. They are not what your mother or grandma used anymore. The type I use simply velcro or snap on. If you have any questions about cloth diapering, I would be happy to direct you to a forum about CDing.

Plus, it is good for the earth and you don't have to put all those chemicals on your sweet baby's bottom.

hey Toni--I think thats what it was, theres nothing more cute and precious than a baby just taken out of the bath with the smells of baby lotion and baby powder and a clean white cloth diaper. Theres nothing else like it. I always used johnsons products, the shampoo, the oil, lotion, soap and powder. Always liked those 'duck' diaper pins too. wow, these are memories I miss of having a little one around. I guess I can always hope for a grandbaby one day. Thats yet to be seen though. Most people think I'm my kids sister...wait til I'm a grandma!!lol

Stan - That program was through Bank of America. Pretty neat savings program, and for the first 3 months, they match your savings!

Jessi - I always shop the clearance racks, I can't remember the last time I bought something that wasn't on sale, unless it was a $5 shirt at Wal-Mart or something :) You can find some awesome deals if you look!!

Toni and Shirley - I didn't use cloth diapers, but I wish I would have! My son is already potty trained and my daughter is almost there so it's too late for me...and NO, I don't think I want any more kids, so there is no next time :D

Tammy - I like using the paper bags because they are free :) and also I taught my son how to crinkle them up to make them look old (which he loves...he's a destructive little boy!) and then color on them. Keeps his mind occupied...that is a full time job, he is a busy boy!
