I recently was a victim of a scam involving a "loan". The people that I sent the money to have my driver's license number and bank info. I've already closed my bank account and filed a complaint, but what can I do about my driver's license and social security numbers? I never gave them my SS#, but I heard they can get it using my driver's license. I just want to make sure I'm as protected as possible considering how stupid I was.

Hey jon_ness105, welcome to the boards!
I went through the same exact thing. I had to file a complaint with my bank and get my money back and close accounts.
I don't think that anyone can get your SSN from your driver's license number, but I suppose anything is possible these days on the 'net. I know you can request to have your SSN changed if you are victim of fraud....I had to. It's a pain because then you have to change records, etc, but it's worth it. As for driver's license number...not much can be done with that, so you can leave it as is.

Take heed of what information you give out to people. Your identity is their ticket to causing you all sorts of problems! If an offer SEEMS fishy (no money is ever FREE!), dont do it! If you need a loan, try to go through your bank!

Hi jon_ness105,

You may follow the following steps to protect yourself. These are the basic things to pursue when identity theft occurs.

  • File a report to local police.

  • Contact the fraud department of three major credit bureaus.

  • Inform your bank and put a hold on your Debit/Credit cards.

  • File a complaint with FTC.

You can file your complaint with FTC online at:

Regards,
Bryan

Since the money that I sent was sent to Canada, does that change anything? I already filed a complaint with fraud.org and ic3.gov. I also contacted the Attorney General for my state. Thanks for the tip about the credit bureaus. I almost forgot about that. I'm sure it will be a long process to keep my credit and identity safe from here on out, but I appreciate all the help and advice, everyone!

Jon, you can activate a fraud alert in your credit file within 24 hours. The three credit bureaus will activate an alert and the data will be shared within them.

Your name will also be removed from all the offers of pre-approved credits and insurance for the next two years.

Experian keeps a fraud alert for a period of 3 months, Equifax keeps for 6 months, while TransUnion places it for 12 months. There is also the provision of 7 year victim statement for which you can keep the alert. But you need to be a proven victim of fraud to use this service.

Be sure to file that police report, because each of the credit bureau's will ask for the report number. All you need to do when you call the police department is explain what you did, and that you think you've been a victim of fraud. Also be sure to mention that you'll need a copy of the police report (may not be available right away, but at least the number will be). The copy is for your records, and then with the report numebr, you can give that to the credit agencies when they ask for it.

....and they will. I've already been down that road disputing an item on my report.

Mimi-

Why did they ask for your DL info and a voided check. That there sounds fishy. Not only do they have your DL#, but they have you're bank info. Who cares if the check says void on it. All they need is that routing number, and that account number.

I'd keep on guard with your bank info. Tell them what you did, at the request of this company.

I don't believe someone would get on here to bash a company. We're simply stating the facts (basically in our own eyes) and what has happened to us. How the company operates and how the employees treat us.

Why would the rep you talked to openly have stated this. Was he trying to get you to pay because his commission check was going to be short that week?

Keep us updated on this. It just doesn't make sense why someone FROM THE COMPANY openly states they're going to court.

I know a few states that use your SSN# as your driver license number. You could easily request to have the number different.

Most of the states that did this, have now changed the policy, and are using actual letter/number comibinations.

In the new DL number, its long enough to where it can't be easily memorized. The DL number should also be protected. Some financial instiutions even recommend that it not be put on your check(s).

Mike
