What if I've already began paying an attorney (their's) for a debt that Midland supposedly did purchase from a former creditor of mine? Can I or should I stop making payments?

It will be your discretion to make or stop payments. But why do you want to stop making payments? Did you sign a written agreement with them
? If you really owe the money to Midland, then it is better to keep on making payments to them.
