Ok, i've been hearing a couple of different stories about debt consolidation...I have some bills that are in collection right now...I'm trying to purchase my first home...so I wanted to clear some things up on my credit report...but will that damage my credit score...should i just contact the people myself...or work with the companies myself...

First---have you talked to a debt counselor yet? If not take advantage of it when they call. I would think that being in consolidation would help your credit score because of the regularity of paying the bills. But, I am not entirely sure---so talk to the counselor and in the meantime I am sure someon will post a reply on here as well. Good Luck!

Your credit file is already tarnished because of the accounts being in collections. At this time, you can slightly improve your file by paying off the debts. They will be posted in your file as paid collections doing slight improvement to your credit. If you wish to take a consolidation program for this purpose, go ahead and get started with the program. You will have the benefits of easy repayments. All the bills will be combined together and you will draw only one check to the consolidation company. They will post your payments to the CAs who will further update your file.
