My girlfriend has Midland Credit listed on her report for a legitamate debt from about 8/03. The debt is $107 from SWB. Midland has the debt listed as an account that was opened in 1/06 making it look current. I have been told if she pays the debt, it looks like a "new" bad debt on her credit. Should she pay the debt and take the ding on her credit or should she not pay it because it will make a 3 year old debt look like a current one. Midland are real scumbags and they have tried all kinds of nasty tactics to force her to pay. Please help if you can. Thanks.

See the date of last activity (DOLA). They can report on whatever date they wish, but they cannot change the DOLA, if they do you can dispute it.

Consider paying the amount if it is within SOL of your state. By paying old debt, SOL clock restarts but its stay on your credit file is not changed. Can you tell us on which date the account was reported as collection?

Off-topic: I like your way of quoting from Hamlet - "To be or not to be, that is the question".

You should always pay your debts. It's 3 years old? I hate to tell you this but it is already a ding on her credit report. It's going to stay on her credit report for 7 years. It doesn't sound like a lot but in between now and the next 4 years she might want to get a loan, buy a car or a home. And because of just that single thing being on there she could be rejected or have to pay a higher intrest rate because it will show up as obligation she refused to honor.

In the long run and I say this because I was young and stupid and didn't pay my bills when i was younger, it is better to pay your bills than to think they won't hurt you later.
