This past week a PDl manger came in on the job.I know her because my wife has a loan with her but she did not want my wife but another girl that works there. She started harassing the girl in front of customers!!!She told the girl she was not going to leave until she got her money. The night manger told the PDL manger you had to leave or he will call the cops!!!She looked at him and laugh "I already have them here"!!!!She went outside for second and then a county cop came in.After the store closed we all left and the girl and PDL manger were talking things out,but the cop was sitting in his partol car.And no one was allowed to be around them while they were talking.I asked her the next day was she ok and did they get everything cleared. She borrowed the money from her brother to pay her off.She also told me that she had to come up with money or that cop she brought to the store was going to take her to jail!!I told my wife what happen and we are going to pay off this payday loan off this week!!!!I know the cop was there for the PDL manger to protect her,but we do not want any harassment from these people!!!

That's insane!! Tell us about it if you don't mind because I think most of us were under the impression that the only PDLs that ever take legal action were storefront lenders, but I thought all they could do was take you to small claims court and try to get a judgement, I had no idea they could show up with a cop!!

the girl was just intimidated.Using Law enforcement in that capacity is illegal EVERYWHERE ! If you had ask that cop for his card and badge # he would have been out of there fast.

Wow. That's incredible.

South Carolina is a non-garnishment state, so getting a judgement would be useless...I guess they felt the need to strong-arm you. Incidentally, why would she go to jail? The check you write at a store front lender is post-dated...So she couldn't be charged with check fraud. maybe she could be charged with uttering and writing, but I really think that would be a stretch.

There is probably more to the story there..I hope so, because that is downright scary!

The cop was probably there as private security. A lot of cops take side jobs, and depending on their department's policy, they can sometimes wear their uniforms. Most allow you to arrange for a police security detail if you "reimburse" the department and pay the officer(s) for their time. Usually, this is done by groups putting on a big function like a fair, etc. When you expect a crowd, local laws often require you to do this to get a permit. But I guess nothing says it can't be done for other forms of security, I guess.

Pretty ballsy to do this just as window dressing for a collection run, though. But I wouldn't be surprised if the company was legitimately using a cop as security when it carries cash back and forth from the bank. I can just picture the manager saying, "Hey, I need to make one stop on the way . . ."

You know, I think that even if it was just a "rent-a-cop" it's pretty low to do that to someone over a flippin' payday loan that was deliquent. I bet the poor girl was scared out of her mind, I know I would be.

I'm sure I'll get bashed for these comments but I really feel sorry for someone who has this happen to them because they defaulted on a a stupid payday loan that probably took over their life and some jerk manager thought they'd scare her into paying. Makes me angry to think someone would stoop that low to scare someone into paying, it's not like they aren't making a load off her anyways if she's been using their store for a while.

Well look at it like this,I was told this story today by another cop.A collection person for a loan company came into town to a old lady home to ask about a loan that she was late on.He told the lady she had to pay this loan or he will have to take her stuff that she had put on the loan for the money. She started crying and got up set.The guy said he would be back later that day with a U-haul.He got back into the car and left and has he was leaving the old lady sons came home. They saw there mother on the steps crying and upset. She told them what happen and they both got back into there car and chase this guy down at the end of the dirt road. They pull this guy out of the car and with a tire tool they both beat him almost to death!!!They broken his jaw, back in 2 places, both arms, knee caps. Now this guy is in a wheel chair for the rest of his life. The 2 brothers got 5 years in jail. This was not that long ago.

I would file a report with the police department of the community that the cop was from. I would call the local paper and let them know. I cannot imagine that the police legally get involved in this kind of stuff. If this was a real cop, soumds like he/she was doing something that would be frowned upon by their superiors, community etc....I am really pissed off about this.

This sounds pretty low to me. Even if they are licensed in the state, I believe the best route would be to take it through the court system not scare someone to death at their place of employment. Of course, we don't know the entire story but this is pretty low in my book. I would be writing to the government agencies in South Carolina to change these kind of laws. If I were that PDL manager, I would be looking for another job. I couldn't live with myself if I had that type of work to do. Very sad.

If this was an actual governmental law enforcement officer, your co-worker should file a FOIA request fr any information relating to that incident, including the nature of the call in which that officer was dispatched. Furthermore, they may want to consider filing a complaint with the chief of police, sheriff etc. about this PDL improperly using law enforcement resources for personal business.
