Hello. I received a letter from a collection agency today about an old credit card. The credit card was opened in 1996 and I believe that it was closed around 1998. Well the card was never placed on my credit report as being charged off, and the collection agency told me that if I did not pay the amount due then in 30 days the account was going to go onto my credit report. Does this seem right? Can they do that. It has been around 8 years since then. Help. Thanks.

Federal laws allow accurate negative information to stay in the file for seven years only. This however excludes bankruptcy and a few others.

Since the credit card account was closed in the year 1998, I am thinking if this account can be reported back in your file now. This can happen only if the SOL gets renewed with the last payment date. When did you last pay towards this account?
