Asset acceptance purchased a charged off debt

this collection agency has purchased a charged off debt and has filed a claim with the national arbitration forum which i have never heard of before. so i got stressed out and called asset acceptance and negociated with them. They asked the forum for an amount $3000.00 more than what i originally owed. I was told that i had to pay 35% of the amount owed plus payments after that per month. I express the fact that I was unemployed and that the 35% I would have problems to get but I would try. Of coarse I never could pay this amount and tried to talk to them several times they said they could help but they never stopped the arbitration and I ended paying them the per month payment and they took that money and tact on 24% interest because I didn't pay the 35% up front. I continued to respond to the arbitration and that also was not done according to procedure now the arbitration rewarded asset acceptance a even larger amount of money I don,t know what to do? Is this a legal process and what can happen to me after the arbitrator has set an award?
