One of my employees received a bill for x-rays from 2001. Aportion was paid by the insurance co, but Alliance Radiology has sent $114.00 to an attorney for collection

Welcome to the Community :D Tha's a pretty common practice. When the insurance doesn't pay the full amount, they come to you for the balance owed, this has happened to me several times. The problem is the SOL. Here is a link to check state by state to see what the SOL period is for your state at http://www.fair-debt-collection.com/SOL-by-State.html#T , it may very well be out of the SOL period. They can write a request for debt validation to the CA, certified return receipt. They can also state they believe it to be out of the SOl period. I hope I have answered your questions!..karen

Make sure that you are doing all the communication in writing. You have to write a dispute letter to the CA if it's past the statutes. First, get the debt validated as said above. You will come to know if this CA has your file with them. In case if you are willing to pay even after the statutes have expired, call the original creditor and work out payment arrangement with them. You won't need to deal with the CA in between.
