i recieved a phone call from asset acceptance stating i owed 633.00 to a power company. the bill was in 1989. they stated that when they recieved it in 2004 it was 504.00. the problem is back in 1989 the power bill was in my ex husbands name and they couldn't give me an address for where the bill occured. this bill is 17 years old and they told me the reason for not contacting me before now is because they had no address, but they managed to find me now even though i don't live in the same state or have the same last name. can they actually collect this?

You have the rights to refuse paying such an old debt because it is outside the legal reporting time period under the FCRA laws. If your pay anything now, this item will be listed back in your credit

Monitor your credit copy regularly because this collection agency can try to enter the negative information and hurt your scores. It will be illegal for them to do unless you make a payment or even show a commitment.

Send a dispute letter mentioning the expiry of the SOL and the account being outside the reporting time period. You need to send your response in writing and cover your basis legally.
