mttwbain -

welcome to the forums, and thanks for posting your question.

Is this a debit card that is also a credit card, or is it just a debit card attached to your checking account? If it's only a debit card, the card would have been declined when the money in your account ran out.

The only other way I can see that this would have happened (and someone correct me if I'm wrong), is if you had other debits or checks outstanding that hadn't cleared your account yet, and you used the debit card before they cleared, thereby using the money that was in your account to cover the other debits/checks. And then, when the other debits/checks came through your account, you ended up overdrawn.

Either way, if your account is overdrawn, you need to contact your bank and discuss repayment with them. Many banks not only charge overdraft charges, but also a separate charge that is applied for every day you are overdrawn. I used to bank with one that was $27 per check/debit that was returned, then $5 per day for every day you were overdrawn. If your account stays overdrawn for a certain number of days, they may close the account.

Your best bet here is to contact your bank first thing tomorrow and discuss this with them, and try to keep in communication with them as you work your way through this.

I believe they can close your account, and report you to checksystems. They can then turn the amount you owe over to internal collections or a bonafide collection agency.

Perhaps you can go into the bank and explain your situation. The bank may allow you to make payments, or even waive some of the OD fees.

mttwbain - as was mentioned above, you will want to talk to your bank immediately today and ask for their help to figure out how this happened. If you were using it as a debit card only, and not using it as a credit card, the bank would only have allowed you to us as much money as was available in your bank account.

Take your checking account register with you to the bank and talk with them face to face - see if you can get this resolved. I'm sure they will work with you if this has not happened before.
