Bennett & Deloney
Date: Wed, 03/28/2007 - 21:25
I recently received a letter from Bennett & Deloney stating that i owe money from my past employer.
The letter itself was extremely generic. It states that i might have gone to criminal court about this, which i haven't and this is pertaining to a civil court. Also, they have made it sound like I was notified earlier about making this payment which i was not.
The amount is for $300 and there is no notice of why it is that much. I might have a clue of why they are after me. It might be about me using my employee discount on others and they caught me for that. It's rather a silly reason. It also states that if i do not make the payment within 10 days of the posted date, their client may request a lawsuit be filed.
I have not worked for this company for almost a year. And for this letter to arrive at this time is just weird. I am a college student in the San Fernando Valley in California and I do not have that kind of money to give away.
If anyone can give me some advice on how to deal with this, please let me know. I do not have any background in matters such as this. I did some reading on the forums here and figured out that Bennett & Deloney is quite unpopular with a lot of people.
Thank you very much.

No, that is not a silly reason. I am certain that if someone you knew stole from you, you'd demand repayment. Get it through your head, you stole from your employer. Sorry if you think that it is acceptable to bite the hand that feeds you.
Now, I'd send them a debt validation letter, and a separate letter stating you will only communicate via mail. Send both letters return receipt.

Maybe i didn't make myself clear. I said that it was a silly reason was not because I thought it ok for me to use the discount on others. Of course I knew it's wrong and of course I shouldn't have done it. That being said, I said it was silly because I never thought it would as far as this. Plus, it's been almost over a year so why now? Hope that made it clear.
So, what is this debt validation letter and where can I get it?

Welcome to the Forums :D Here is a list of sample letters at http://www.debtconsolidationcare.com/letters/ You can use them as a guide, just insert your info, and add whatever you need to. They will come after you many years later, not just one. I had someone try to collect on a medical bill 13 years later- and it had been paid in full!! You need to make sure these people have authority to collect this debt, and this wll be done by Devt Validation. Good Luck-Keep us posted..KAren
The text of the letter pretty much explains it all, just edit it

Because now they choose to pursue it. Maybe they have a stack of situations just like yours, and they finally got yours (this is very likely the case if you worked for a large chain store. In California, they are prohibited by law from deducting the amount from your paycheck, so they have to procure repayment in other ways, i.e., a collection agency and/or a lawsuit.
Also, I don't know what the SOL would be on a debt of this natur
Also, I don't know what the SOL would be on a debt of this nature (assuming that it is employee discount abuse).
