I received a letter from Universal Fidelity stating that I owed $410.00. I called them to ask what this was - they could not give me any information other than that I owed 410.00, but if I paid it today with a check by phone, it would be 296.00, or by credit card, it would be 287.00. They stated it was for a payday loan I had last September. The whole thing sounded like a scam to me - and I would like some information. I was under the impression that all of my payday loans had been taken care of. When I talked with my bank, they said money had been debited to my account in August. Why after all of this time, 7-8 months, am I just now being told that I owe money, and do I pay it?

Thank you in advance. - Jan Bristol

Hi Jan,

I believe Universal Fidelity is a collection agency/dept for Sonic Payday. Sonic threatened to turn me over to them when I defaulted on my loan with them. I would recommend not paying anything to them until they validate the debt. Check the DIY section of the forum for a sample letter to use. Did Universal give you any contact info like phone number or address? You will need to send the letter certified mail with return receipt. This way you will have proof they received it. Do you still have your bank statements from last fall showing the loan was paid off?

Even if you have a payment arrangement set up with them, they will add fees to the payment amounts without putting that in a letter sent to you. If you question anything, they get hostile and angry for asking questions and accuse you of refusing to pay a debt. Best advice for you is to get an attorney who will stop these bullies from calling and harassing you even when payment arrangements were made. Make sure your attorney is specialized in debt collector harassment and abuse. Also, let your voicemail take in their calls. Do not call them back! Let your attorney straighten them out! These Collectors are looking for a way to make you say that you are refusing to pay a bill and call a person names.
