Quick tax question
Date: Thu, 04/19/2007 - 20:20
I filed someone's 2005 taxes for them and sent them in (paper mail). On the forms we selected the direct deposit option. We just checked the "Where's my refund" link on irs.gov and it says her refund will be mailed tomorrow. Does anyone know why it doesn't say electronically deposited? And, if they are mailing it, which address will they send it to, because she doesn't live in the same location as she did for all the jobs reported for in 2005...

When your friend did her return, did she provide banking information? In order for a refund to be directly deposited, banking information, which includes a routing and account number, must be provided. Otherwise, a check will be cut and mailed.
Her refund will also be sent to her filing address, the address that was in the first part of her return. Hope this helps!

Yes, we included a routing and checking account number, which is why it is strange to me that it is saying it will be mailed?? It's not for any amount less, as the website has the same dollar amount that I'm showing on the forms.

That is indeed strange. I would have her call 1-800-829-1040 tomorrow and get that clarified. Now that they are past tax day, there should be no delay in getting someone on the line.

Another note to add...we put my checking account information, not hers. I thought it would be fine, because her company direct deposits her payroll into my checking account, but I think I just read online that it will come back if it doesn't match her name...yippy!

Is her name on the account as an authorized signer? If so, it should be OK. I would check with your bank as well.

She isn't. That's why I was glad that they started direct depositing her paychecks, because I am on direct deposit as well with my company. I thought they would reject her payroll, but they didn't, that's why I thought they wouldn't reject her irs refund. As long as it comes to the address that is on the very first lines of the refund we are okay...just can't have it going to that old address. So, I'm glad you atleast clarified that for me! =)

I would still call the IRS on this. My gut feeling is that your bank isn't going to reject funds going into it, but possibly the IRS does verification with the bank; don't know for sure, but wouldn't be surprised. Hope I was able to help!

they will mail it because of the name on the bank account.. if you have seen the news a NEW scam about a web site for filing changes the account info so they are being very careful and checking the name against the return I would think that is why it is being mailed..

Poptartsmom, you are quite correct. The Irs has been burned by multiple scams in the last two years so they are streamlining their direct deposit policies and one change is the verification of signature cards.
