I received a court summons for a 5 year old debt that with interest and penalties has totaled to $2200. I'm in the process of negotiating a settlement and I'm in dire need of tips and some guidance of this entire process. I've spoken to the rep about 4 times now and my max offer thus far has been $800....he claimed he'd call me back on monday...he didn't so I called him this morning....and he said he hasn't herd back from "them" regarding my offer yet...and he'd call me asap....I feel he's trying to kill some time as the court date is May 10th...and he feels the pressure will make me offer more perhaps?

What do I need to do to put his behind me and settle this for the least amount of money possible? I'm a college student and obviously broke.

Is the process typically back forth phone tag and how long does it take to settle?

Any and all help is appreciated!!

Thank you!

It sounds like you are on the right track. In fact, judges like to see that some effort has been made to settle before it reaches court (they have enough on the table without hearing bill collector suits). If you were talking to the collector, he probably wasn't trying to kill some time, because he would get a commission (and probably doesn't care whether it goes to court or not). Be persistant in calling them, if you haven't heard back from them.

Always check out the Statute of limitations in your state for Payday loans. If time has run out they cannot take you to court.
