I recently found out that my girlfriend in her own stupidity has racked up around $16000 in credit card debt. She has consolidated the majority of it but on card refused and it has a balance of over $6000 and the interest rate on it is upto 33%, and the minimum amount due is over $400. After she pays her rent, car payment, and all of her other bills and credit card debt she literally can barely afford to eat. She has dug herself in a big hole and at her current situation she will never be able to break free from debt. Much of the time she over draws her checking account because she has no other choice. My recommendation was to declare bankruptcy. Isn't there some other way that she could some how settle her debt for a much less amount? I know it would destroy her credit but that would be better than bankruptcy wouldn't it? Any help would be much appreciated thanks.

She can try to send a proposal to the original creditor but they may or may not accept it. Chances are if if she is consolidating and behind on bills her credit is not so hot either way...She should try to get them to settle but if she is this far in over her head, she should probably talk to a debt counselor to see what her best option is. I filed bankruptcy when i was younger but I do not recommend it if it can be avoided.

Yes, before your girlfriend ultimately sets up her mind for bankruptcy, she can try for a debt settlement with her creditors. Who is the credit company she is dealing with? Talk with different settlement companies about her situation. Verify with the attorney general's office and the BBB if they are reputed and have mentioned all the terms clearly in the contract before your gf signs for it.
