Collection Agencies- Can they do this?

I noticed on a collection agency letter recently that they said "If I didn't get back to them within 30 days, that they would assume the balance owed was correct". The letter is from several months ago and I never really looked to see what the exact wording said until today.

All of them do it. It does not mean you automatically agree to it by not responding. You can dispute the debt and request validation at any point. Your best bet is to do it within the 30 day time limit after receiving the first notification though.
