Need advice

I'm about 14,000 in credit card debt. I pay on the cards but I don't really seam to get anywhere. I usually pay at least 40 over the min. payment. I'm thinking about doing some kind of debt consolidation program but I'm concerned if I even can because I'm not in default. I don't have great credit but its not bad. How much do those programs hurt your credit? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
