State law varies, but service can usually be made on anybody over the age of 13 who resides in the defendants home. To that effect, if you live with your mother, then it is probably legal for them to serve her in your stead.
Generally service is made in the form of a summons and complaint. The summons commands you to appear, where the complaint lays out the plaintiff's basis for suing you. Since those two documents become a matter of public record upon filing with the court, there can be no expectation of privacy -- The process server did not reveal anything that wasn't already available to the public.
