Debt Management or Credit Counseling?
Date: Wed, 11/19/2008 - 12:06
My net take home is around $2200/month with debts equalling about $1750 leaving me with about $450 to live on (transportation, household expenses, utilities & groceries).
I have tried talking to my creditors about my financial situation and most have been unreceptive with assistance.
Would it make sense to use a credit-counseling non-profit org., or to go with a debt-reduction company? Or something else? At this point, my credit score is a moot point and I'm drowning in my debt. I want to pay off my debt and do not want to declare bankruptcy. I have cut out as much "fat" as I can to free up extra cash, but it seems to not help any.
I realize that I put myself into this situation and I want to make "right" on it, but I still need funds to live on and right now, I pay my household expenses late because I do not want to miss a creditor's payment.
What are your thoughts? Any feedback is greatly appreciated - good & bad.
Thank you.
Hi San ~ You're going to find a lot of great information on this
Hi San ~ You're going to find a lot of great information on this site. Take a look around for some general information regarding debt management vs debt settlement (I'm assuming that's what you mean when you mention debt reduction). You'll read both good and bad experiences as well as thoughts about specific companies.
If you join as a member to this site, you'll get a free consultation with a credit counselor. I would always always opt for a non-profit organization....I've read in several sources that for-profit companies will not benefit you as much as you would hope. Look for a highly respected non-profit credit counseling service...unfortunately I don't have a name right at the moment but I'm sure someone will be along to help. I hope that's helpful :)
