My initial account was with Chase for only $500.00.
How is it legal that this account was closed years ago, with my making payments on this account over time and I am still being sued for $5,000?

How old was your debt? Being a credit card debt, a debt of $500 can never increase to $5000. Even if they sue you, I don't think that they can bring a money judgment against you for $5000.
