Nothing is better if you can handle the financial issues yourself. Now, if you are a tough negotiator you may not find the need to hire the professional services of settlement companies.

If you are still in terms with the original lender, always try to settle with them. There certainly are some advantages in settling with the creditor directly. The percentage of settlement would depend upon your ability to negotiate your case.
