HELP! Account in collections now with law firm
Date: Thu, 02/10/2011 - 18:08
I was told to call the law firm and settle the debt with them. If it is with a law firm will they accept less than what I owe? Or do I now need a lawyer to do this? I now have the means to settle the account, and would like to do so, instead of being sued.
According to my credit report, they also say I owe about $3,500 more than I owed on the card that is in question. I now live in another state, Alabama now instead of Missouri. If they sue me: don???t they have to summons me to court personally, or can they just mail it?
Should I let them know that know I live in another state?

You can contact the law firm on your own and try to negotiate with them so that they are ready to settle the debts with you. If they have to sue you, then you will receive a summons from the court personally or they might send it to you via mail. It will be your discretion whether or not you want to let them know whether or not you live in another state. If you feel that you won't be able to settle the debts on your own, then you can take the help of debt relief companies.

Hi!
Welcome to the forums!
Before settling your debts with the law firm, check whether or not the account is really with them. So, send them a written request to validate the debt via certified mail. If they can validate the debt, then arrange a payment plan with them. You can also know about the actual debt amount from them. If they can't validate the debt, then send a cease and desist letter to them.
You can get a list of verified debt relief companies from our Ranking Chart section. If you want to settle your debts on your own, then the following page may help you in doing it

If you do receive summons from the court, then I think it will be better to get help from a lawyer. You can also know about how to answer summons from this page:
