I am currently seeking a position with FEMA. They did a mandatory credit check to make sure everything checks out. I got a response saying I owe almost 4000 in debt to Midland Funding LLC dated back in 2008. I have never once heard anything from this company???? What should I do? I live in michigan.

Hiya,

The first thing to do is to send a certified letter to Midland, informing them that you just learned of this account placed on your credit report. Tell them that you dispute the debt and, in accordance with federal law, you request validation of the debt. As I said, be sure to send it certified mail return receipt requested so you can prove it was sent and received. The only thing you can do after that is wait.

Also, on your credit report,. is there any detail of this debt? Did they list original creditor or anything else? Remember this too--there are a few dates that are listed on a credit report entry. The 2008 date could be when they purchased the debt, not when the debt was originated or when it became delinquent. In your state, the statute of limitations is 6 years across the board, so it is very important that you find out whatever you can about this debt. Once you send that letter off, be sure to update us with any new info you get, or with info from the credit report, so that we can help you make sense of this.
