Hi, welcome to the forums!

Sorry to hear about your recent legal troubles. Unfortunately bad money management isn't the only thing that can get us in debt.

Have you tried talking to your probation officer, and perhaps get your time extended, which could lower your monthly restition payments? If you're doing what you're suppose, and present them with your money troubles, perhaps they could tack on another few months which could quite possibly lower your payments by $100 or so.

Also, bringing this up to your creditors won't help. They won't care. Explaining to them that you're currently under financial distress, WITHOUT GOING INTO DETAIL, but also explaining to them that you're not trying to avoid the situation might get them to work out a deal. Be prepared to accept a deal if its a bargain. Sometimes big deals only come around once, and you might have to penny pinch for awhile.

Never accept a deal that you can't stick to.

See what kind of items you could do away with for awhile. Can you check your internet at work, and get rid of it at home. Can you deal with just PBS for a few months, and get rid of cable. Or even trying store brand foods instead of name brand. These are just a few things, that over the course of your probation could save you $100's.

Trust me. My roommates probably get a pizza at least once a week, at a bargain of course, costing around $5. However, that still ends up being somewhere around $275 a year. That could pay off a payday loan, or a credit card.

By the way, payday loans are evil. Never use these as a a fix. They are only meant for short-term use, and are usually required to be paid back the following payday. They also carry high interest rates.

Another option would be debt consolidation. With this program you can consolidate all your debt into one low-monthly payment. However, with this, you MUST stick with the program for it to work. Registering on this site should get on the right track. I see you've already done so. A debt consolidator should be contacting you shortly, and go over the program benefits, and explain how everything works.

Let us know on the outcome. And stick around in the forums. We can all help with any questions you may have. Plus we're a fun bunch. Happy holidays!

Regards
Mike

Hello and welcome:

You have come to the right spot because there are people who are willing to help you here like they have done for me. I hope that you have gotten rid of your problems regarding the DUI's and now you can focus on your debt. You may want to consider debt consolidation. Sit down and first examine how much debt you have and your current financial income. Then go from there.
