I'm in a situation that's bad, but not terrible.

I owe about 16,000 in credit card debt.

Right now it's just manageable, but I'd like to get on top of it better.

I called Bank of America, since they have two cards of mine, and asked if they could help me. They took down my information and told me they had a person from Care One on the line who could help.

I told them I wasn't looking for a company like Care One, I wanted to find out what Bank of America could offer me.

They said nothing.

I said "well can you at least lower my 24% interest rate?"

They said no.

I hung up.

The balance on the card is 3,700 and it's current.

Did I do something wrong, or are they content to see how much they can get before I break?

i have had perfect credit for 30 years. just before the credit card 'protection' act was made law, my low interest credit cards shot up to 29.9%. nothing had changed in my payment behavior. then all my minimums were raised, particularly by chase, which went from 100 to 500 a month on a 5% balance transfer that was good til paid off. they couldn't raise the rate, so they were trying to cause me to be late or default, i think, so they could jack up my rates.

i was unemployed at the time, so what was, i thought, a short term problem i could get thru using my savings, has turned into a mountain that i will not get out from under in my lifetime, and that's why i'm here. i think they will push you until you break. as long as you are still paying on time, letting them take it from you, they will continue to do so until you have nothing left for them to take. you have to default. then they will try to figure out what you have left to take and get it before letting you off the hook. i KNOW i have paid back my indebtedness many, many times over, so i have to remorse.
