I was denied credit due to unpaid bill from 2008 reported by CBCS. I disputed the information as the unpaid bill was for services charged by my cell phone company after I terminated service by phone, which I don't have any documentation to prove. What can I do to eliminate the bad credit report so that I can get credit?

I applied for my first credit card today, unsuccessfully. My banker told me that my credit history was showing debt with CBCS, and that it was just added this past July. The original debt is listed to my regular hospital for some lab test. The hospital, the lab work, even the amount look familiar, but I'm still skeptical. I haven't received any information from CBCS (by mail or by phone) regarding the debt, and after reading all of the problems so many others have had, I'm afraid of what I've gotten into without knowing it. Can someone please give me advice on what steps I should take to deal with this? If I end up paying the debt, that's fine, I just don't want to be taken advantage of, which I fear is very possible with CBCS. Should I call my hospital and verify this information, then ask CBCS for a debt verification letter? I'm nervous to contact them, since it seems they are relentless once they have your contact info, regardless of whether the debt is unresolved or already paid in full.

Help, please!
