Can you settle your credit card debt yourself?

We often hear about settlement companies helping consumers to get out of debt. But, my question if can't I settle my debts myself?

Yes, of course you can! You have to negotiate with your creditors to reduce your outstanding balance amount. But in most of the cases, it takes a considerable amount of time to convince the creditors for negotiation. Whereas, a genuine settlement company will have a professional, who is expert in negotiating with the creditors.

You can settle debts yourself. This is not a rocket science, which you can't learn. But there are few tips that you can use. For instance, always check the validity of the debt before initiating the negotiation process. Next, save half of the outstanding balance before making the settlement offer. Third, threaten to file bankruptcy if they don't accept your settlement offer. Fourth, don't pay a penny before you get everything in writing.
