How long can they keep charging late fees and interest

Hi guys i am currently in the middle of negotiating a settlement with my credit cards ,they r 5 months past due my question is how long can they keep charging all these fees ie.interest,late fees overlimit fees etc i currentely reside in illinois thanks john
