deposit a check I didn't know was fraud

What will happen if I deposited a check from a source I thought was legit but was not. I took it to my bank thinking it was a good check and my bank cleared the check.
But after the weekend, my checking account shows a negative amount of the exact amount of the check I deposited and cashed.
Will I be arrested? What do I need to do to clear my name? I have all the paperwork from the person who sent me the bad check? I can't afford to pay this back? I never had that much in my checking account to begin with...
Thanks!

You will not be arrested for the same, because the bank account from which you received the money did not belong to you and you are not involved in the check fraud. Moreover, you should visit your bank and check why the money was debited from your account after the deposit. Keep all the papers with you in case you need to produce them.

Whatever the case was, the OP will be responsible for paying the money back to the bank. Any deposits made to the account will be used to offset the negative balance until the account is brought current. Usually after x amount of days (30 - 90) being overdrawn, the bank will close the account, report it to ChexSystems (usually) and you will still be responsible for paying it.
