Anyone have the latest with Citibank? Are they settleing? I am in deep with them, about $30K and am currently on a payment plan for 12 months, not settlement. Unless things change I am only going to be able to keep up my end of the deal a couple more months. I can borrow a lump sum from a family member to get this over with but have heard they are brutal to deal with. Originally they offered me only $1850 off the total debt and at the time I was 90 days late. This was early 2009. I could get maybe $15-20,000.

Who would of guessed I would have a two job loss family and bills piling up like this.......Oh well.

I am at 180 days as of today, and they have been like talking to a brick wall. I charge-off today, and they will not budge one bit. I was told I will be transferred to the recoveries group after today. I'm hoping that they will be more open to settling, rather then sending me to legal or selling me to a CA.

Good luck.

What have they offered settlement wise as a percent of total debt? Anything?

Today, they offered nothing. They said I had to make a minimum payment first to keep it within their department and from charging off, and only then they will discuss a settlement. Obviously I declined that.

A week or two ago, the representative thought it was possible to settle at 40%. I presume that offer was yanked, given my conversation this morning, but I can't accept/afford 40% anyway.

Now I'm just hoping that when it transfers to the Recoveries Department, that they are willing to work with me rather than suing or selling me to a CA. I'm staying optimitic though, because this is how I settled my HELOC loan... after charge off, while the debt was with the recoveries group, prior to being sold to a third party. I think they have more latitude to settle once the debt is in fact charged-off.

I have a Shell Mastercard from Citi. 11K balance and was coming up to my 120 day mark when I received a letter from their Northland Group collections dept. The letter had a settlement offer of 45%. I called the acct rep and settled for 4500 (40%) payable over 90 days.

Another thought is I have had this account for many years. What I am finding out from many banks is the longer you have had an account with them, the more likely they are willing to settle.

They will not likely settle with you until you are 120 to 180 days past due. It sounds like you definitely have a hardship due to loss of income. Have you considered consulting with an attorney supervised debt settlement company? This may be the best thing for you to do. By enrolling with an attorney supervised debt settlement company, your rights will be protected and you will have the best chance of an aggressive settlement.

The latest on my end is that they've turned me over to United Collection Bureau (UCB). I don't think they've actually sold the debt to UCB, although I'm not certain (just sent request for validation today). But in the letter from UCB, they said I should remit payment to Citi and gave me a Citi address to send payment to.

I hope to call Citi Recoveries Dept today or tomorrow and see if I can deal directly with them, instead of UCB. Or at least get a sense for whether the debt was sold or not.
